As part of its engine overhaul operations, ORAO a.d. Bijeljina employs several non-destructive testing (NDT) methods to detect any defects that may have developed on aircraft engine components during previous service. In accordance with the original Rolls-Royce overhaul documentation, two primary inspection methods are applied: Fluorescent Penetrant Inspection (FPI) and Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI).

For this occasion, Vladimir Ilić, Head of the Overhaul Department at ORAO, explains the principles and importance of Fluorescent Penetrant Inspection.
"In our case, we use the highest sensitivity level of inspection. To explain it in simple terms, this method enables us to detect cracks as small as one micron in width on both metallic and non-metallic components. In the aerospace industry, we adhere to a zero-tolerance policy for defects, meaning that no cracks or any other indications are acceptable on any component that forms part of an aircraft engine. There is absolutely no room for error in this segment of the overhaul process," emphasizes Ilić.
He points out that ORAO and its personnel hold all the required licenses in accordance with international aerospace standards for both FPI and MPI processes. Furthermore, the company is certified by Pratt & Whitney Canada and Rolls-Royce of the United Kingdom.

"These certifications are issued by some of the world's leading aerospace companies. For these specialized processes, we employ certified personnel qualified to Level II and the highest qualification, Level III. Fluorescent Penetrant Inspection can be performed on both ferromagnetic and non-ferromagnetic materials, whereas Magnetic Particle Inspection is applicable only to ferromagnetic components," says Vladimir Ilić, Head of the Overhaul Department.
According to Ilić, an additional advantage for external customers from various industrial sectors is that inspections can also be carried out on-site using visible dye penetrant methods, which are widely applied in less demanding industrial environments.
With an 81-year tradition in the aerospace industry, ORAO a.d. Bijeljina has established itself as the leading aircraft turbojet engine overhaul company in the Balkans. This position has been achieved through continuous investment in highly qualified personnel, state-of-the-art equipment, and advanced technologies, ensuring the highest standards of quality, safety, and reliability.
